Thinking about a pen name... Yeah I know I've posted this like everywhere. :P

I'm starting to think that I should try to publish Area 9 when it's finished, even if it's not very professional, and I was thinking about what name I should use. Even if I don't publish Area 9 I should really get a pen name! I did some research into pen names and it turns out that your name is very important. It has to sound good, it can't be too long or complicated, and it should be easy to spell and remember. It should also suit the genre/style you're writing in (You shouldn't use a very old fashioned name if you're stuff is very contemporary, etc.). My real name is not suitable because it's not easy to spell or remember, and considering my target audience, a unisex name would be a better choice, because my style is closest to shounen and guys are more likely to read something if the author could be a guy. (Of course, my art isn't always so boyish [link] hehehe)

I need something I could use for both my art and my manga. The best name I've come up with so far is:

Carlin Logan

I think people could call me that and it wouldn't sound strange. But... Is it good? What does it make you think of? Does it sound more like a man or a woman's name? Does it suit my drawing style and my manga?

Please tell me what you think!

P.s. Just in case someone suggests it, I don't want to use a Japanese name. It would sound weird unless I was actually living in Japan and was trying to sell my stuff there. A name that sounds good both in English and Japanese would be good, though...

I think... should just be Carl Logan, that would sound good and it would be simple 'coz Carlin (at least for me) sounds kinda like a girl's name and you want a male one...

@GONE: Not a male one, just one that COULD be a male one. I'd feel really weird if I had a guy's name so an ambiguous name is best for me. ^^'

I might change it to something that sounds less western, though... (but not too Asian either because I'm not Asian)

This is coming from a sixteen-year-old girl's perspective.

Is Logan an actual last name!?! Carlin (while being a unisex name) sounds very similar to Caroline, and you will probably be taken as a female. If you are going for something ambiguous you might want to look into something else.

I think you should check out a site called "Behind the Name." It gives you information on popularity, opinions of the name (from what comes to mind, to general feel), meaning of the name, as well as place of origin. You can also search by any of the above, which is nice. (So basically it's the same as "BabyNames" but more user friendly).

Currently your name means...

Carolin: "Free Man" (English/German/French) or "Little Champion" (Gaelic)

Logan: "Little Hollow" (Scottish)

But of course I know not everyone is into names quite as much as I am. I do a little writing too, and I like for my names to be chosen for reasons other than just "sounding right" (although that is just as important).

There are many factors that go into pen-names. It could be based on your first work, or remind you of someone close, or even just "fit."

If I had to choose a pen-name based on Area9 I would chooose:

Alexis (or Alex) Clarke
Defender of Men, Scholar (or one who can read or write)

(Not fond of Alex or Alexis, but Alexis actually sounds good for a guy, wouldn't you agree? I really love the meaning.)

But that might not be you at all or suit any of your future works, so you have to make the ultimate decision!

Also love this page! One complaint: Every page leave me wanting more!

@Guest: Thanks for the comment! That site will be useful for choosing a name. ^^

I'm starting to think that Carlin Logan isn't such a good name after all (But yes, Logan can be a last name). It sounds like the name of the author of a realistic novel rather than a manga.

Actually, Alexis sounds more girlish to me (I think it's a nice name, though) and I'm not so fond of Clarke. :P

Because I like sci-fi and fantasy manga, I might get away with using a less realistic name. Perhaps I could even use my screen name, but I think 'Lumi' sounds better. Lumi is a real Finnish name which means snow. (But, it's a girl's name) I'll have to think about it some more...

Anyway, thanks for the long comment! I'm glad you like this manga! :)
