Well... It looks like this is the end... I'll miss my manga and everyone who commented on it! *cries*

It’s strange that, when I was making this I felt as if I’d have a lot to say, but now that it’s over I’m somehow left speechless. It’s been 2 years since I started this manga and it felt like a part of my life. I wonder if it’ll feel like there’s a hole in my life now that I’ve finished my comic?

So much has changed since I started this two years ago. Back then, my drawings were absolutely awful, and now they’re somewhat bearable. This was actually supposed to be 60 pages long but I went 200 pages over that. I remember being amazed when Area 9 got around 40 fans on Smackjeeves (The first site I hosted my comic on) after a day, even though it only had like 2 pages (whether these fans were hoping for yaoi or not, I do not know XD). But for quite a while, all you would see in the ‘similar’ comics were bl, bl, more bl, and it was really strange thinking about who was actually reading it. Fortunately, there is now no bl in the similar comics so it looks like people are now reading it for the story, and not because they hope Taishi and Bomb will get together in… that way. O.o (Really, can you imagine TaishixBomb? That’s just disgusting XD)

Since then I’ve posted Area 9 on 3 more sites: DeviantART, Mangamagazine and Tapastic. I’ve received lovely comments from people on all 4 of these sites and they encouraged me to keep working on my comic. It was still kind of depressing to see my comic being surpassed by so many other new comics (because I used to be naïve and thought I could just come out of school and do this thing for a living, or a part time job that pays), but when I think about how I’ve grown to love my comic and my characters and there are also other people who enjoy my comic, I feel like that’s still a great accomplishment. Not to mention I’ve completed a comic from start to finish and I’m going to get it printed so I can put it on a bookshelf in my room and look proudly at it forever. :D There was also that time when Area 9 somehow appeared in the Trending section of Mangamagazine a few weeks ago and it really surprised me, because I thought that was only for new comics. And seeing that I got nearly 20,000 views that week even though I always got less than 5,000 per month before, and seeing that Area 9 was ranked no. 1 in that week’s member comics even though it ranked 70th just a few weeks or months ago, surprised me so much that I had to spend a while staring at my screen in shock. xD

I know Area 9 was pretty short but I don’t regret making it this short. I simply wouldn’t have had the writing or drawing skills to make such a long series. Not to mention, I’m in school, which means that sometimes I’ll have no time to draw while at other times I’ll have plenty. I just don’t have a steady lifestyle yet so I don’t feel as if it’s a good time to start something very long. But I want to keep getting better so that someday, I’ll be able to remake Area 9 into something much longer! When I started writing this I didn’t see it as something that could be very long, but now I can see a lot more potential for a longer story. I want more time to develop my characters and their relationships, their backstories, and the plot. I don’t know when this will happen, but I really hope I can remake it sometime.

As for my next project… I really don’t know what’s going to happen. I’m going into my last year of school, and then I have to go to college and I have no idea what college that will be or what college will be like… In fact, I don’t even know what I’m going to study, so I don’t know if I’ll have time to work on a big project like a manga. But what’s for certain is that I won’t be able to start anything for at least another year. So, if you still want to follow my works, you’d be better off following me on DeviantART or Tumblr, or even Mangamagazine, where I will post illustrations and sketches, because I really don’t know when I’ll be able to start another manga.

I’m now in the process of going back over all the pages to look for mistakes and make small changes in the dialogue, as well as some changes to the tones, and I’m also making extras for the book. It’s making me nervous because I’m worried that I won’t be able to make smooth halftones and the whole thing will turn out wrong, but I’ll just have to cross my fingers and hope it comes out right on my first try. If everything goes smoothly, it should be on sale at the end of this summer or the start of the school term (September).

Well, it looks like I had quite a lot to say after all. Sorry for writing so much. XD So once again, a big thank you to everyone who has read my comic and commented on it, and also my silent fans who never commented but read the whole thing and enjoyed it. I was always very happy to see a comment on my comic and I loved how nice or amusing some of them were. I hope I won’t disappoint you with my future works!

Ps. Now that the comic is over I would really like to know what you thought… What you liked, what you didn’t like, what I could have done better etc…. I want to get better so constructive criticism would be really helpful!

*Sniff* I'll miss you and this comic. I consider this my little baby comic since found it in it's beginning stages. (Area 9 is the only comic I've ever snapped up from the "Brand New" section-tab). Now it's all grown up. :') I'm glad I got to be a witness to this little oneshot. Even if the was a bit sappy at times, I enoyed it immensely. I look foreward to a hopeful future comic in the future.

As for critisim, I'd just say your art style is really unique, but I'd suggest getting really grounded in it before starting a new comic. There was a bit of fluctuation of style in Area 9, although that was expected since your still a developing artist (aren't we all?). Honestly, though, watching an artist grow and develop before my eyes is one of my favorite parts of webcomics as a medium. Also backgrounds, I want more of them in your next comic!

Bomb is still the best character, hands down! (I really like spastic characters like him). The flashbacks were handled magnificently. You developed him very well, while still sticking to the original characterization.

There might have been a bit too much dialogue and soliloque. Too much telling and not showing, but that is common with begginners (as well as Western-style comics in general). More of a personal preference.

Again, this was a wonderful read. I'll miss checking up on it once a week in anticipation of updates. I wish you luck in the years to come.

Now don't go and thank me for reading, because it was my pleasure. Rather, thank you for the telling.

@SmackJeevesNinja: Wow, this is the best critique I've gotten! :D I agree, my art style looked pretty different back then... I think it'starting to settle down a bit, though... At least, I hope it is. xD Backgrounds...I do need to draw more of them. D:

Oh yeah... I was kind of worried at times that Taishi's monologues might have been too long. ^^; Then again, at least it's not as bad as the monologues in Shingeki no Kyojin. :D (great anime btw, but there are some painfully long monologues where the characters spend like half an episode talking to themselves. I think that anime taught me a lesson xD) It does seem like the kind of thing an inexperienced writer would do... Having too much to say, but not being able to condense it. I'll try to work on that skill for my next comic.

And uh... Ok, I won't thank you for reading. But I have to thank you for all your awesome comments! You always had something interesting to say that was more than 'nice comic', 'cool page' etc. Longer, more thoughtful comments are always a pleasure to get! So thank you for that, and I hope you will like my next comic just as much as this one! ^__^

I'm glad my friend introduced me to this comic because i loved it the whole way through, i find art style unique and interesting and i just cant think of any negative criticism right now. You're very talented and i hope to see more from you in the future. And i still plan on buying some of your prints too

@DaringDestiny: You were introduced by a friend? That somehow makes me feel popular. :D

I miss this comic. Haven't quite found the right one to replace it yet. I'm not sure I ever will. :') I'll have to re-read soon to get my Area 9 fix.

Oh! Also, you should mark your comic as "completed." So that way people won't just think it's been abandoned and not start it. ;)

Reply Lumnili, September 29th, 2013, 3:17 am

@SmackJeevesNinja: Awww... Maybe I will start a new comic in a year or so which will serve as a replacement? But I still don't know how similar it'll be to Area 9. O:> Or maybe you will get something better than a replacement in years to come when I remake it. :3

Oh yes, I've thought about that, but I think I'll make an announcement once Area 9 has been released in book format, and THEN mark it as complete. :)

: D This is a really great series! I stayed up till like 3:30 AM to read all of it (to be fair I started at midnight or 1 AM so I wouldn't have gotten much sleep anyways) XD and I'm so glad I read it, I do not regret that tomorrow I'll be going through school in a haze, this was a fantastic comic and I hope to see more in the future c:
